My earliest memory was when my dad took my brothers and I to see Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. When we came home, my dad secretly went into a bedroom and two hours later came back with a diorama of Echo Base for us to play with.
I can still remember it today…made simply made out of cardboard box, styrofoam packing from a boom box, and cotton balls for snow. Still by far the best diorama I’ve ever had.
Ever since then my brothers and I converted practically every piece of foam and everyday materials into playsets and dioramas for our figures.
Pandemic hits and I am working from home. To pass the time I pick up my diorama building again and begin to convert sections of our basement into a makeshift workshop with the goal of prototyping a large scale diorama of my own.
My figure, tool, and material collection was minimal at best but I made due.
TL:DR - Failed a bunch, learned a bunch, continue to learn more, and get better.
My passion for the hobby turned into a repeatable yet iterative process where I continue to learn something new with every build.
How to work with a wide variety of materials, how to burn my fingers from hot glue, and what happens when your cuts are not square are just a few things I learned along the way.
Despite all that I have created a better design space, stockpiled more resources, better tools, and picked up experience to kickstart the process.
